King & Wood Mallesons internationally recognised in IAM Patent 1000 2014

King & Wood Mallesons has been ranked internationally in Intellectual Asset Management’s IAM Patent 1000 2014, a guide to the top patent practitioners in key jurisdictions around the globe.

Describing King & Wood Mallesons as a ‘global powerhouse’ the publication said: “Few recent tie-ups have combined top-tier practices in the way that the union of Chinese leader King & Wood and Australian ‘Big Six’ member Mallesons has achieved. Redoubtable UK player SJ Berwin joined the fold in late 2013 to create what is now considered a global powerhouse. Landmark patent litigation is the order of the day, though the firm is a refined performer all-round. Biochemistry ace Wenping Chen, commercialisation expert Scott Bouvier and tenacious litigator David Rose are leaders in Beijing, Sydney and London respectively.”

Nongfan Zhu, global coordinator of Intellectual Property at King & Wood Mallesons, said: “These rankings not only reflect the truly international capabilities of our IP practice but the strong presence we have in the UK and in our flourishing German practice. An area of continued legislative and judicial advancement globally, IP law is hotly contested and ever-changing and our clients rely on our breadth and depth of knowledge to solve their most significant challenges.”

As well as receiving international recognition, the firm’s UK, German, Australian and Chinese offices were featured across the following categories: transactions, litigation and prosecution.

In the UK, the team was recommended for transactions and litigation. Described by the guide as ‘go-getting’ with a ‘sophisticated patent litigation practice’, the London office stood out for its litigation expertise, cited as ‘compelling for clients on the hunt for deals’. David Rose is described as the team’s ‘top litigator…who is never more at home than when directing must-win IP cases, particularly within the pharma sector.’

Tipped to ‘take the German patent scene by storm’ the German the IP practice was commended for its ‘sophisticated commercial mindset’ and its ability to offer clients advice in both competition and patent law. Michael Knospe is well placed to ‘position the firm at the forefront of the domestic market’ and Jan Dirk Heerma is a ‘broker of big-ticket technology deals’.

Recommended for both transactions and litigation work, the Australian IP practice is deemed to have 'substantial corporate clout’ which ‘presents a key advantage in the transactions space’. Several of the team’s partners were recommended for their work including: Kim O’Connell who ‘has a string of courtroom successes under her belt’, John Swinson who is recognised for his ‘computer science background’ and Scott Bouvier, ‘a pre-eminent licensing expert’.

Of the China IP practice, ranked for litigation & transactions and prosecution, the guide said, “the team has a pristine track record in landmark litigation and can leverage on the firm’s solid corporate practice to provide astute advice on commercialisation opportunities.” Nongfan Zhu’s ‘insider’s appreciation of client needs’ is highlighted, whilst Zhongsheng Li is commended for ‘insightful counsel on infringement suits’ and Wenping Chen for specialist knowledge in biochemistry cases.
