Ryunosuke Ushijima specializes in cross-border contract practices, international dispute resolution and antitrust law and other regulatory law related practices. 

His experience resulted in a book entitled "Introduction to Legal Practices of International Transactions", which was published in 2011 from Civil Law Research Association.

His practice areas include

1. International Transactions

Drafting and negotiating import and export agreements, agency agreements, distributorship agreements, joint venture agreements, M&A agreements, manufacturing agreements, technology transfer agreement, various service agreements, etc.

2. International Dispute Resolution

Representing Chinese enterprise and Taiwanese enterprise in JCAA arbitration proceedings, Japanese enterprise in ICC arbitration proceedings and Japanese enterprise in AAA arbitration proceedings

Assisting Japanese enterprise and individuals in antitrust litigation, product liability litigation, patent infringement litigation, trademark infringement litigation, copyright infringement litigation, etc. in foreign countries, and representing foreign enterprises and individuals in complex litigation in Japan

Submitting legal opinions on Japanese laws in connection with antitrust litigation, product liability litigation, etc. in foreign countries 

3. Antitrust Law

Assisting Japanese enterprise in responding to criminal, administrative and civil proceedings in Vitamin International Cartel case, Marine Hose International Cartel vase, Automotive Parts International Cartel case, etc.

Requesting Japanese authorities to commence investigation on behalf of foreign enterprise, and defending against Japanese authorities’ investigation on behalf of foreign enterprise

Assisting Japanese and foreign enterprise in merger notification throughout the world including Japan

4. Corporate Law

Researching Japanese business laws and regulatory laws for foreign enterprise, establishing subsidiaries and branch offices in Japan of foreign enterprise and assisting in handling corporate matters thereafter, giving various advices to Japanese enterprise on Companies Act, Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, corporate compliance, etc.

5. Financial Transactions

Giving various legal opinion letters for foreign banks

6. Real Estate Transactions

Assisting foreign investors in investing in real estate in Japan

7. Intellectual Property

Representing Japanese enterprise in patent infringement litigation, trademark infringement litigation, copyright infringement litigation, etc. in foreign countries, drafting and negotiating intellectual property right license agreement, etc.

Work Experience

Ryunosuke Ushijima joined King & Wood Mallesons Law Offices (Foreign Law Joint Enterprise) in 2018.  Prior to that, he served as an associate attorney Ushijima & Associates from 1990 to 1997, as an associate attorney of Miyake & Yamazaki from 1997 to 2002, as a partner of Miyake & Yamazaki from 2002 to 2016, and as a partner of Miyake, Ushijima & Imamura from 2017 to 2018.

Ryunosuke Ushijima graduated from Waseda University, LL.B. in 1984 and New York University Law School, M.C.J. in 1996. 

He was admitted as a lawyer in 1990 (Dai-ni Tokyo Bar Association) and admitted to the practices of law in New York in 1997.    

His working languages are Japanese and English.
